There’s no shortage of people looking for a quick buck by trying to rob a casino – sometimes by the people who are in charge of preventing the crimes. A Merkur Slots casino in the UK is one of the most recent targets, although the crooks weren’t able to complete their mission.

This past Tuesday, when they thought no one would notice, three men tried to break into the property in the town of Hull. Although it was around 4:30 in the morning, when most people were asleep, their efforts didn’t go unnoticed by a local resident.

Using some type of electric power tool didn’t help. The noise may have alerted the resident, who then contacted the Humberside Police. From there, the chase was on.

Foiled in the Act

The would-be thieves were reportedly still in the act when the police arrived, according to a Humberside Police statement. When the officers pulled up, the trio scrambled, apparently empty-handed.

In doing so, they reportedly left behind the power tool. The police didn’t specify the type, although the most likely choices are an angle grinder or a reciprocating saw. Neither performs its job silently.

One of the three was able to make a quicker getaway than the other two – he took off in a white BMW they allegedly used as transportation. His fellow crooks, however, took off on foot.

All three were able to elude the police and are still in the wind. However, the police hope they can track them down with the help of locals.

Cameras of all sorts, including street surveillance, business monitors and doorbell cams, are increasingly popular in the UK. The Humberside Police has put a call out to anyone who may have caught a glimpse of the crooks on camera to submit the footage.

There’s no mention of a reward if someone’s information leads to the capture of the thieves.

Casinos Make Good Targets

With all the cash they handle, casinos make good targets for crooks, enticed by the thought of an easy score. Just a few days before this theft, and across the pond in Canada, another crook had more success when he targeted a casino.

This past Sunday, at around 4 p.m., a man went into the Century Casino St. Albert, a Century Casinos property, wearing a mask and carrying some type of gun. He threatened an employee, who turned over an unspecified amount of cash before the crook fled.

It’s going to be difficult, but not impossible, for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to find him. Despite being almost completely covered in black attire, they believe he’s in his 40s and is around 5’5”.

They also know the vehicle he drives. Surveillance footage caught him leaving in a late-model black Jeep Cherokee, which will become a key piece of evidence in the ongoing hunt to track him down.
