When September began, news spread quickly that Mike Sexton was facing serious health issues. One of the best ambassadors for the game had been fighting prostate cancer for quite some time and the disease had spread to other organs. A month earlier, Sexton had been subject to in-home hospice due to his need for constant care. Unfortunately, over the weekend, it was announced that Sexton had passed away.
Dedicated to Poker
For Sexton, he chose to dedicate his life to poker. He spent several decades as a player and was well-respected by his peers. He then started working as a commentator for the World Poker Tour and became even more well-known.
At the same time, Sexton used his status to advocate for poker and become a true ambassador in every sense of the word. He worked with partypoker, helping the online poker company get off the ground and see continued success. Just another accomplishment to add to the long list that Sexton has created.
Sexton was such a beloved player and overall person, that he was the only member to be added to the Poker Hall of Fame in 2009.
Charity Work
Another memorable aspect of Sexton’s career is that he was committed to charity work. He was always finding ways to give back. In 2006, he won the WSOP Tournament of Champions, earning $1 million in prize money. He donated half of that amount to five charities.
He also helped to push charitable events such as the Big One for One Drop, a $1 million event that takes place each year. Sexton was always trying to give back when he could, helping other people through his success.
As a beloved and very respected member of the poker community, Sexton will certainly be missed. He contributed a great deal to the game and will be remembered for many years to come.
